Scamander (literary group)

"Scamander" ( Polish. Skamander ) - Polish poetry group.

It was founded in 1918 by the poets Julian Tuvim , Anthony Slonimsky , Yaroslav Ivashkevich , Kazimierz Vezhinsky and Jan Lehon . The name proposed by Jan Lehon received in honor of the mythological river, according to the Iliad , flowing around the ancient Troy .

The group was formed in 1916-1919 and was active until 1926-1928 . During this period a monthly magazine of the same name was published. Maria Pavlikovska-Yasnozhevska , Jozef Wittlin , Stanislav Balinsky , Kazimera Illakovich joined the group. The group collaborated with the Russian literary group Tavern of Poets . After the collapse of the group, its members of the scandalites continued to be perceived as a kind of community.

The model for scandalitis was primarily the poetry of Leopold Staff . With a fundamental orientation toward programlessness associated with the idea of ​​freedom, the scandals were united by the desire to combine poetry with modernity and everyday life, the poet’s understanding as an artisan of the word that does not rise above the “crowd” of the participating poet participating in political and public life.
