Rumpelstiltskin

One miller had a daughter, and in a conversation with the king, to give himself weight, he said that his daughter could spin a little gold from straw. The king put her in a room full of straw. He instructed the girl to fulfill the promise. In fact, she could not do anything like this, but suddenly a dwarf appeared and offered help. The girl gave the dwarf her necklace for help, then the ring, but the king demanded even more gold coin: and when there was nothing to give the girl in return, the dwarf asked her for the first-born from the upcoming marriage. When the king took her as a wife and her child was born, a dwarf appeared and demanded his reward. The queen begged to leave her a child - and the dwarf stipulated that if she guessed his name in three days, he would leave her a child. The queen sent messengers to all parts of the country to learn rare names, and one of the messengers accidentally overheard a dwarf singing a song:

Today I’m baking, tomorrow I’m making beer,

I will take the child from the queen;
Ah well that no one knows

The messenger told the queen the name of the dwarf. The queen called him. "ABOUT! It was the devil himself who made you wise, the devil himself! ”Cried out the little man and stomped his right foot on the ground so angrily that he went waist-deep into it, grabbed his left leg in rage with both hands and tore himself apart in half.

The original tale in German was published in 1857. It was first translated into Russian as “ Junk ” edited by Peter Polevoy , and published in the collection “Tales Collected by the Grimm Brothers” in 1895 (the collection was reprinted as “The Brothers Grimm. Collected Works in Two Volumes” in 1998 ^{[4 ]} ). Subsequently, 2 times translated by Grigory Petnikov : as “ Junk ” and as “ Rumpelstiltskhen ”. Tamara Gabbe translated the tale as “ Gnome-Tikhogrom ”. ^[5] In one of the modern translations, the tale is called Titelituri .

Similar motives for guessing the name of an evil magical creature are in the folk Icelandic fairy tale "Gilithrutt" ^[6] , and in the folk English fairy tale "Tom-Tit-Tot", where the queen must also guess the name of the creature that helps her spin ^[7] . "Lucking for Money" is a Finnish folk tale ^[8] . The Czech fairy tale “Martinko Kinkash”, the French fairy tale “Wirluwe” ^[9] . Slovak writer Maria Dyurichkova (1919-2003) wrote the fairy tale "Golden Spin". In Scottish folklore there is a fairy tale “Wippetie Storey.” “Bibigul” is a Kazakh folk tale.

There is also another version of the name of Rumpelstiltskin - Utrupistas.

In the monograph by Sigmund Freud, “The Artist and the Fantasy,” the dwarf Rumpelstiltskin is mentioned in an example illustrating the postulate that dream motifs are often found in fairy tales, or rather, a dream is often interpreted by a person as a similarity to a fairy tale known to him. Freud suggests that this may be an appeal "to a deeper infantile layer of dreaming ideas." ^[10]

• In honor of Rumpelstiltskin, the asteroid 1773 Rumpelstiltskin , discovered by Paul Wild in 1968, is named.
• In the Final Fantasy series of games, a stray muggle- merchant named Stiltzkin appears - a truncated Rumpelstiltskin (in the English version of Rumpel stiltskin ).
