The length of the front wing of the imago is 18–29 mm. The top of the wings is dark brown to black, with many large and smaller white spots. The underside is brown, with white spots. Females are larger than males and carry wider white bandages on their wings.

Distribution

Eurasia , Southern France , Switzerland , Northern Italy , Austria , the north of the Balkan Peninsula , Southeast Poland , the Czech Republic , Slovakia , Eastern Europe , Southern Siberia , Mongolia , Northern China , Korea and Japan .

Habitats

The valleys of rivers and streams, thickets of shrubs, edges and glades among sparse deciduous forests. It rises into the mountains to an altitude of 1300-1500 m above sea ​​level .

Flight Time

Depending on the season and latitude, it develops in one or two generations. The first generation appears in late May and flies until early July. The second generation flies in late July and August. Males show territorial behavior, protecting the selected area from other males. Butterflies rarely visit flowers, mostly found on moist ground near streams or excrement. Young caterpillars, descendants of the second generation, build a cocoon from leaves for wintering and pupate in early May.
