The early years

Little is known about the early life of Pope Eugene. His father, Ruffian, was a Roman from the first Aventine district. From his youth, Eugene was known for kindness and politeness. He was a clergyman from his youth and held various posts in the Roman Church.

Election

Eugene was elected pope after the expulsion of St. Martin by the Byzantine emperor Constant II and showed greater respect for the wishes of the emperor, did not allow public criticism of monotheelism and the patriarch of Constantinople. Martin was expelled from Rome on June 18, 653 , and was in exile until his death in September 655 . Little is known about what happened in Rome after Martin left, but most likely he was ruled by archpriest and archdeacon .

A year and two months later, Martinu's successor was found in the person of Eugene.

Board

Being elected a papa, Eugene continued the struggle with the Monofelites .

One of the first acts of the new pope was the sending of papal legates to Constantinople with letters to Emperor Constant II, informing him of the election of the pope and setting out the foundations of faith. The legates brought back a synodal letter from a supporter of the Monophelites, Patriarch Peter of Constantinople ( 656 - 666 ). Peter's letter turned out to be written in a complex and obscure style and did not contain any specific statements about the essence of the dispute with the Monofelites. When the contents of the letter were read out in the church of St. Mary, the clergy and people not only rejected the letter with indignation, but also did not allow the pope to leave the basilica until he promised that he would not accept its provisions. Moreover, Eugene anathematized Patriarch Peter.

Byzantine officials were so unhappy with the actions of the pope and the Roman clergy that they threatened to expel Eugene, as they expelled Martin I. Eugene was saved from the fate of his predecessor because of the outbreak of war with the Arabs, who took Rhodes in 654 and defeated Constant in the naval battle of Phoenix ( 655 ). Pope blessed the Byzantines to fight the Arabs.

Most likely, it was Eugene who greeted the young St. Wilfrid on the occasion of his first visit to Rome (c. 654 ). In Rome, Wilfried gained the sympathy of the archdeacon Boniface, who introduced him to the pope. Eugene "laid his blessed hand on the head of the young servant of God, prayed for him and blessed him."

Nothing more is known about the reign of Eugene, except that he ordained 21 bishops in various parts of Europe.

Eugene I died in 657 from natural causes and was buried in St. Peter's Basilica. The Catholic Church is revered as a saint; Memorial Day - June 2 .
