The wolf is the Russian governor of Prince Svyatoslav I Igorevich , known only by the retelling by the historian V.N. Tatishchev of a fragment of an unsaved chronicle.
According to V.N. Tatishchev, the Wolf commanded the Russian garrison in Pereyaslavts during the departure of Svyatoslav with the main forces to Russia in 969 . Upon learning of the departure of the main Russian forces, the Bulgarians besieged Pereyaslavets , blocking all communication routes. During the siege, the Russians ran out of food and the number of dissatisfied citizens in Pereyaslavts itself increased. Then (in 970 ), in order to save the army, the Wolf applied a trick: “ .. Volk defended himself firmly in the city and, seeing a lack of food, but rather knowing that some citizens agreed with the Bulgarians, it was inconvenient to leave the army with Russia, since in the field and along the Danube in the rooks the Bulgarians firmly guarded, he secretly ordered his rooks to be prepared on the shore. And he, showing the view, announced that he wanted to defend the city until the last person, Svyatoslav expected, because he ordered the horses to be cut, the meat should be salted and dried; at night, having gathered an army, the hail in several places lit up, that the Bulgarians saw, and began to get hail. But the Wolf, having retracted his rooks, attacked and, taking the Bulgarian rooks on the other side, went with the whole army and estate down the Danube. And the Bulgarians could not do anything to him, because all the boats were taken away. ". Having retreated to the Dniester, the Wolf with its troops joined the main troops of Svyatoslav [1] .
The reliability of the plot about the Wolf is very difficult to prove or disprove due to a lack of additional information.
