Worldwide success
The Chronic
The Chronic becomes one of the classic albums in hip-hop history. About half of the songs on the album Dr Dre performs with Snoop Doggy Dogg . Among others, the album has the song “Fuck Wit 'Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')” - a diss on Eazy-E . From the musical side, the album was also a revelation, it was made in the style of G-funk .
Knight's rise and departure Dre
In 1995, shortly after Tupac signed with Death Row, Dre left the label, arguing that Sug Knight had become corrupt, dishonest and uncontrollable.
Death Row in the 2000s
Sug Knight was forced to sell the label - that was the decision of the bankruptcy court . Material problems at Death Row began in 2005 when Lydia Harris demanded $ 107 million from Sug, saying that he owed her share of the label’s profits. In 2006, Death Row was declared bankrupt.
The legendary label was almost sold at the auction of the Global Music Group for $ 24 million, but the deal was not completed due to various disagreements. Ultimately sold for $ 18 million to WIDEawake Entertainment.
Interest in the label was also shown by Warner Music Group and Koch Records .
In 2012, New Solutions Financial Corp. went bankrupt . Is a Canadian company that owns WIDEawake Death Row. They had to put up for sale a label with a full catalog of copyrights for all the material. The sale transaction took place on December 10.
Since 2013, Entertainment One has owned all musical rights, material and the Death Row brand itself.
