BR 218

The locomotive of the 218 series is a German four-axle locomotive of the 2o + 2o type with hydraulic transmission, operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB). For a long time was the most popular diesel locomotive on the railways of Germany . These machines can be found in our time on many non-electrified lines in Germany, they are used in both freight and passenger traffic.

Creation History

Series 218 is the latest diesel locomotive of the V-160 family with hydraulic transmission that combines the most successful features and solutions of the series from V-160 to V-169 (according to the modern classification, the series 215 to 219).

In 1966, the German railways ( Deutsche Bundesbahn ) ordered 12 trial diesel locomotives, for which they provided the V-164 series. In 1968, Krupp designed and built these diesel locomotives, which went into a series like. From 1971 to 1979, they were made by Henschel, Krauss-Maffei and MaK factories. 398. Later, the 215 series diesel locomotive No. 212 was added to the Baureihe 218 series, converted after the accident in 218, it received number 399. The diesel locomotive was delivered in four stages. The first arrived diesel locomotives with serial numbers 101-170, the second - 171-298, the third batch - diesel locomotives under the numbers 299-398, the fourth - 400-499.

Diesel locomotives 218 were equipped with diesel engines from 2500 to 2800 liters. sec., accelerated to 140 km / h, and were used in both passenger and freight traffic. Over the years of operation, diesel locomotives 218 have established themselves as the most reliable, until 2000, these diesel locomotives were the most popular on the roads of Germany. However, due to the gradual renewal of the locomotive fleet by January 2008, 220 diesel locomotives of the 218 series remained in operation.

Modifications

Series 218.9

In 1970, eight diesel locomotives of the 210 series were commissioned, largely identical to 218, but accelerated to 160 km / h due to additional gas turbines operating in parallel with diesel engines. After the locomotive 210 No. 008 had a fire in the engine room on December 31, 1978, after two years of examination, the turbines were dismantled from all eight machines. In the period from 1980 to 1981, these diesel locomotives were converted into 218.

In 1981, these eight diesel locomotives were assigned to the Kempten depot numbered 901 to 908. In 1983, they were transferred to the Braunschweig depot, and later, in 2001, to the Stendal depot. From 2004 to 2006, all diesel locomotives of this modification were decommissioned and cut into scrap metal.
