Radiation ecology or radioecology is the science that studies the characteristics of the existence of living organisms and their communities in the presence of natural radionuclides or technogenic radioactive contamination. There are two major directions in radioecology - the study of the behavior of radionuclides in ecosystems and their components (soil, vegetation, animal communities) and the effects of ionizing radiation on biota and humans (subsection of general radiobiology ).
Radioecology was formed by the mid 50s. XX century. due to contamination of the environment with radioactive substances as a result of nuclear tests, nuclear industry waste, accidents at nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities.
