Nitric oxide synthase 1 , neuronal nitric oxide synthase is a human enzyme encoded by the NOS1 gene on the 12th chromosome . Contrary to the name, this form of NO synthase is expressed not only in the brain , but also in the muscles.

Clinical Importance
The possible role of NOS1 in asthma, [2] [3] schizophrenia [4] [5], and restless legs syndrome is noted. [6]
The predisposition to hypertrophic pyloric stenosis of newborns ( OMIM 179010 ) is significantly associated with variations in the NOS1 gene. [7]
