History

Santa Fe. View from space

Santa Fe was founded on the site of the modern village of Cayasta (where the historical park is now the grave of Hernandarias, the first governor born in South America ) in 1573 . The city was moved to a modern place in 1653 due to the constant flooding of the Cayasta River. The provincial capital of the city was in 1814 , when the territory of the province of Santa Fe was separated from the province of Buenos Aires by the National Constituent Assembly, which was held in the city in 1853 .

The construction of the suspension bridge (a sort of business card of the city) was completed in 1924 , although severe flooding partially destroyed it in 1983 (the second bridge, Orono , was opened in 1971 ).

The city is still not insured against floods . Thus, on April 29, 2003, the level of the Salado River , which flows into Parana near Santa Fe, rose by almost 2 m (6.5 m) within a few hours after heavy rains, and caused a catastrophic flood. At least 100,000 people had to be evacuated, as well as many neighborhoods of the city remained under water for more than a week. In the same year, the suspension bridge was opened after repair, and in 2008 the old grain elevator area was turned into a complex of hotels and casinos of Los Silos and San Martin Street.

The role of the city in Argentine history was expressed in its choice as the venue for the Constitutional Convention in 1949, 1957 and 1994.
