Komarno ( Slovak. Komárno , German: Komorn , Hungarian. Komárom , Serbian. Komoran / Komoran ), a city on the territory of итitný island in southwestern Slovakia on the Danube . The population is about 37 thousand people, most of whom are Hungarians (60.1%), Slovaks (34.5%).

Content
History
In the 1st century, the Roman settlement of Brigetio appeared on the site of Komarno. In the 4th century, the Romans were supplanted by barbarians . In the VI century Avars and Slavs penetrate here, in the VIII century the territory is likely to become part of Great Moravia . In the 9th century , Hungarians appeared here and already in the 10th century the first Hungarian fortress Komarom , the capital of the eponymous committee, appeared here . The first mention of it occurs in 1075.
In 1265, Bela IV gives Komarno city rights. In the XVI century, during the wars with the Ottoman Empire , Komarno built a powerful fortress - the Old Fortress. In the XVII century, the New Fortress was built. Komarno was never taken by the Turks. After the cessation of wars from the 18th century, Komarno became one of Austria 's most prosperous cities.
In 1745, Maria Theresa gives Komarno the rights of a free royal city. In 1870, a modern fortress, one of the most important in Austria-Hungary , was completed here.
In 1898, a shipyard was founded in the city.
In 1918, after the collapse of Austria-Hungary, the city was divided into two parts. The larger one falls into Czechoslovakia , the smaller - under the original name Komar - into Hungary .
In 1938, before the outbreak of World War II, the Czechoslovak Komarno, as well as the adjacent territories on the northern bank of the Danube, were transferred from Czechoslovakia to Hungary (see Munich Agreement and the First Vienna Arbitration ).
03/28/1945 the city was liberated by the Red Army [1] .
In 2004, the Janos Scheie University was founded here - the only university in Slovakia with the Hungarian language of instruction.
Serbian community
On May 17, 1511, the first Orthodox church built by Serbian monks was consecrated in the city. In 1690, during the Great Relocation of Serbs to Komarno, a significant Serbian community was formed. In 1754-1770, she built the Vvedensky church , which has survived to this day. In the 19th century, the community fell into decay. If in 1826 about 1,500 Serbs lived in the city, then in 1869 there were only 112 of them left [2] .
History of Economic Cooperation
During the existence of the Eastern Bloc at the Komarnen shipyard “Narodny Podnik Skoda Komarno (Slovenske Lodenice np Komarno)”, the Soviet Union ordered river boats. The most famous ships built at this shipbuilding enterprise: project 26-37 (year of construction of the lead ship and the name - 1957, "October Revolution" , built 14 ships of this project); Project 92-016 (1976, “Valerian Kuybyshev” , 9 units built, are the largest river vessels in the world of this class). Currently, the dock is used for ship repair.
