Tantojutsu

Tanto in the sheath and his blade

Tantojutsu ( Jap. 短刀 術 ) is a pseudo-Japanese, modern term that appeared in America, meaning hand-to-hand combat using a knife .

There are no traditional Far Eastern schools of martial arts containing at least some capacious system of tanto actions. All techniques are isolated actions that replicate the basic technique of a style adjusted for a short blade. They experimented a lot with the creation of combat systems using knives in the schools of the state ninjutsu / jujutsu of the Edo period, but these attempts did not leave significant traces, possibly due to the later dominance of Kodokan judo.

The modern term, was formed as an antithesis to the sections of counteraction to the attacker with a knife, the so-called "Tanto-dori" ( 短刀 捕 り り ) existing in various styles of budo.

Often cited as an example of "tanto-jutsu" is the Japanese style of Takenouchi-ryu , which uses the term "kodati" and its section with a short sword technique, is included in the general section of torite / kogusoku ( Japanese 捕手 腰 の 廻 (小 具足 組 討) ), not standing out in an independent "jutsu".
