Mentor (c. 385 BC , Rhodes - 340 BC ) - Greek military leader who served in the Persian army of King Darius III .

The mentor, like his younger brother Memnon , came from the island of Rhodes .
Together with his brother, the Mentor served the Persian satrap of Phrygia Artabaz , and was taken over by Troas . In 362 BC e. Persian satraps, including Artabaz, rebelled against King Artaxerxes III . The uprising was crushed, and in 353 BC. e. Artabaz and Memnon fled to Macedonia to the court of the Macedonian king Philip II . However, the Mentor stayed and was able to negotiate with Artaxerxes. Arthaxerxes may have granted forgiveness to the Mentor, but in return ordered the Mentor to seize Egypt , which had previously fallen from the Achaemenid state. After a long struggle, the Mentor in 343 BC. e. was able to conquer Egypt and consolidate the control of the Persians over it. After that, the Mentor was promoted and further fought against the anti-Persian rebels in Asia Minor . He also helped Artabaz and his brother return to Asia.
In 340 BC e. The mentor passed away and was replaced by Memnon, who married his widow Barsin . Mentor's daughter later became the wife of Nearch .
