The first building of the Royal Theater in the Haymarket was built in 1705 according to the design of the architect John Wanbru . The prefix "royal" ( King's Theater ) theater received in 1714, in honor of King George's accession to the throne.

In 1711–1739, more than 25 premieres of Handel took place on this stage, in the 19th century practically all the first stars of European theaters of opera and ballet toured here, the English premieres of Mozart's operas and other composers took place. In 1843-1850, Caesar Pugny served as a composer of ballet music.

The current theater building was built in 1897 according to the design of for the founder of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art Herbert Birbom Three . In the first decades of the 20th century, Three staged Shakespeare's works and other classic plays here, and the theater premiered plays of such playwrights as Bernard Shaw , John Sing , John Priestley , Noel Kaward .

Since the First World War, thanks to its wide stage, the theater has acquired musical specialization.

  • July 22, 1847 - " Pirates " ( Italian. I masnadieri) - four-act opera by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi on the libretto , written by Andrea Maffei. The basis of the opera was the plot of Friedrich Schiller 's The Robbers , written in 1781 at the sunset of the Storm and Onslaught movement , published anonymously and not originally intended for staging on stage.
