Biography
Early life
Marlon Fletcher was born July 29, 1971 in the Jamaica area in Queens. He attended John Quincy Adams High School, where Fred Lee Scruggs, Jr. (also known as Fredro Starr ) and Tyrone Taylor (also known as Suave and Sonny Seeza ) also attended .
Musical career
Onyx
In 1988, after graduating from school, at the age of 17, Fredro Starr creates a rap group with his school friends: Big DS and Suave. Big DS came up with a name for the band - Onyx - in honor of the black gem. [1] They start making their first demo recordings in the basement of B-Wiz using the SP-12 drum machine. [2]
"... B-Wiz was my producer when I was 15, or even 16 years old. When all the other kids had a turntable, he had a drum machine (sampler) SP-12. He was one of the first niggas in the quarter with a drum machine. "
In 1989, they met Jeffrey Harris, who becomes the band's manager and helps them contract with Profile Records to release one single. In 1990, at the York Studio in Brooklyn, they recorded their first single, “Ah, And We Do It Like This,” which was released on April 25, 1990 via Profile Records. However, the single had low sales. [3] [4]
“... It was the very first single that was produced by B-Wiz. B-Wiz was the first producer of Onyx, it was he who produced the track "Ah, And We Do It Like This", and many original versions of the tracks for Onyx in 1987, 1988, 1989. "
Jam Master Jay
Big DS and Suave first met Jam Master Jay at Rev Run ’s wedding at Run-DMC in 1990. [5] Big DS, Suave and Fredro Starr met Jam Master Jay in a traffic jam at the annual The Jones Beach Greek Festival Festival for the African-American College students on July 13, 1991. [6] [7] Jay gave them about two months to record. Suave and Big DS were not able to come to the studio; they were in Connecticut because they were involved in a robbery case. [8] Therefore, Jeff Harris, Onyx manager, asked Fredro to come to the studio with his cousin, Kirk Jones, who at that time was doing a solo career under the name Trop and working in a hairdressing salon, making a thousand dollars a week, cutting hair from high school students. Fredro and Sticky recorded two songs: "Stik 'N' Muve" and "Exercise". [9]
“... When we came to the studio, we made two notes. One of them was called 'Stick and Move', and the other was called 'Exercise'. And both of these records were crazy! When Jay heard the songs, he said: “Yo, I love this band.” ”
Fredro and Jay were in his Mercedenz-Benz car and listened to the Onyx demo tape. As soon as Jay heard the song “Stik 'N' Muve”, he said: “What is it! Turn up the volume! This is what I'm talking about! I need 12 songs like this. ” And this is how Sticky joined the group, as Jay said: “If Sticky is not in the group, there will be no group!” At first, Jam Master Jay signed the group to their single JMJ Records for the single , then for the EP , but they made 10 songs on a budget of 6 songs, so Russell Simmons signed a contract with them to release a full album. [10] [11]
Def Jam
In 1993, Onyx released their debut album, Bacdafucup , via JMJ Records, tied to Def Jam via another label, Rush Associated Labels. The album was a commercial success and eventually became multi-platinum , mainly due to the famous single “Slam”, which also became platinum. Onyx then released two more albums on JMJ Records: All We Got Iz Us and Shut 'Em Down . JMJ Records and Onyx were officially expelled from Def Jam on Black Thursday January 21, 1999 because the PolyGram label, which in 1994 bought 50% of Def Jam from Sony, was sold to Seagram on December 10, 1998. [12]
Contribution to Onyx Group
Big DS coined the name For Onyx. He named the group after a black gem. [one]
“... Because I am black, so I chose the name Onyx for my group. We are all black. And we are very valuable. Just like this black gem. We are valuable because we have been through a lot. ”
Solo career
Big DS left the band in 1994 to begin a solo career. [13] Big DS founded his own label, Illyotic Music, and began producing music. After recording several demos, Big DS sent them to Jimmy Iowin, co-owner of Interscope Records , hoping to sign a record deal with his label.
Death
On May 22, 2003, Big DS died in a hospital in Queens after undergoing chemotherapy for cancer of the lymph nodes. He was 31 years old. [14] [15] [16]
