History of Martyrdom

Canadian martyrs preached Catholicism in New France (now Canada) and in upstate New York among the Huron and Iroquois Indians . In 1639, the Jesuits established the mission " Holy Mary among the Hurons " on the territory of the Huron tribe, which lasted until 1649. The Jesuit missionary activity was met with resistance from the Indian shamans , who in every way opposed the preaching of Christianity among the Indians, accusing the missionaries of sorcery and the deliberate spread of disease. Despite resistance and persecution, Catholic missionaries preached the Christian faith to the Indians. During tribal wars they were captured and tortured. In Catholicism, it is believed that such a fate befell them for the practice of Christianity. At the same time, the circumstances of the death of most Canadian martyrs are related to the fact that they were associated with the allied tribes of the French, and, accordingly, during the fighting they were exterminated by the allied tribes of the British.

On June 21, 1922, Pope Pius XI beatified and on June 29, 1930 he canonized the following missionaries in a group of Canadian martyrs:
