Jardins de la Fontaine ( Fr. Jardins de la Fontaine ; translation options - “source gardens”, “ fountain gardens” [1] ;) is one of the attractions of the city of Nimes ( Gard department , France ).
The gardens were laid out in 1745 according to the design of Jacques-Philippe Marshall , military engineer Louis XV . Previously, this place was home to a sanctuary dedicated to the deity Nemaus identified with Hercules and built around a sacred source (hence the name of the gardens). Initially, the aim of the work was to regulate the regime of the source: the weaving industry of the city constantly needed water [2] . But after the discovery during excavations of numerous monuments of Roman architecture , it was decided to break the park.
The remains of ancient Roman buildings are inscribed in the classical ensemble of the park (the statue of the nymph Nemaus, staircases, fountains). Among the most famous monuments in the vast territory of the park are the so-called Temple of Diana and the Tower of Man .
