Biography

Family and career

Born in a middle-class family that occupied a prominent place in the political history of Concepcion . His sister, Ines Enriquez Froden ( 1913 - 1998 ), was a lawyer, leader of the Chilean Radical Party and the first woman elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Chilean Parliament. His brother, Umberto Enriques Froden ( 1907 - 1989 ), was a professor of law, a Chilean senator and Minister of Health. Another brother, Hugo Enriquez Froden, served as director of the Juan Aguirre Hospital in Santiago and was a member of the World Health Organization . [2]

In 1930, Edgardo entered the medical school of Concepcion University, graduating in 1936 . As a student, he received several awards from Concepcion University and the University of Chile. Married to lawyer Raquel Espinosa Townsend, they had four children. His youngest son, Miguel Enriquez ( 1944 - 1974 ), founded the Revolutionary Left Movement (MIR) party and led resistance against Pinochet's dictatorship.

Since 1938 he served at the Naval Academy, first as a doctor, and then director of the Naval Hospital in Talcahuano . He received the rank of captain of the naval medical service. Edgardo was also a professor of anatomy and medicine at a number of schools and institutes, under his leadership in Concepcion the first Latin American Studies Conference was held in 1969 . [2]

National Unity

In July 1973, Salvador Allende, to reassure his opponents in Congress, who systematically criticized his democratically elected socialist government, began the formation of a new cabinet. Allende offered ministerial posts to members of the Christian Democratic Party , the party that traditionally represented the middle class in Chile [3] . Amid open political provocations by the enemies in Congress, Allende found it difficult to find someone who would agree to take the post of Minister of Education, as the reforms that he initiated met with serious obstacles. Education reform, which increased spending on public education and universities and facilitated access to higher education for the working class and people from slums, was faced with strong opposition from private schools (which were supported by the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy and the organization of employers), which the Chilean elite usually gave their children away to prevent them from communicating with lower class people.

In such circumstances, Edgardo Froden took over as Minister of Education, but his tenure was soon interrupted due to the overthrow of the Allende government on September 11, 1973 .

Arrest and Link

After the overthrow of the Government of National Unity and the death of President Salvador Allende , the military junta declared the former members of the government enemies of the state. In various ways, they were removed from the political scene of the country. Froden was arrested, imprisoned, and then transferred to a remote concentration camp on Dawson Island. In 1976, he went into exile with his wife and settled in Oxford , from where he moved to Mexico in 1978 , where he remained until 1991 [4] , devoting his life to a campaign to search for missing persons in Chile and condemn human rights violations committed Pinochet mode.

He died on November 1, 1996 in Santiago.
