Reasons for writing
In the August issue of Mojo magazine, vocalist and guitarist Matthew Bellamy talked about a song inspired by a book called The Great Chessboard by Zbigniew Brzezinski , explaining that “Brzezinski has the view that Eurasia, that is, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, should be managed America to provide it with oil resources. " [1]
Bellamy also suggested that George Orwell ’s 1984 song [1] influenced the song.
Release
While it was originally expected that “USoE” will be the first single released with The Resistance , the band announced that it will be “Uprising”. “USoE” has become a “prize” in the so-called “treasure hunt”. Fans were asked to find six fragments of a song hidden in different cities of the world, including Moscow . Russian fans found a flash drive with a fragment in Moscow, and then in New York .
Reviews
The song received mixed reviews from critics and fans. NME magazine came out with an interview with the group shortly before the release of the album, where this song was identified as one of the key tracks of the upcoming album. A French review published at MuseBootlegs.com expressed the opinion that this song contained allusions or even quoted such works as “Bohemian Rhapsody” Queen , the track of Maurice Jarre from Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and the Nocturne in E Flat Major, op.9 No. 2 Chopin. Some media outlets were less receptive and rated the song 2 out of 10 because of low-quality political rhetoric.
