Educated in English. Albion College ( Wisconsin ) in 1866. Since 1871 he was a priest and lectured on botany in English. Jarvis Hall and the University of California at Berkeley .

In 1885, he refuses the dignity of a priest and devotes himself to teaching. Until 1887, he was a professor of botany at the University of California, in 1887-1888, he was an assistant professor of the Department of Botany, and an adjunct professor of botany; since 1890, he was a professor of botany at Berkeley.

In 1895, he received his doctorate in law from the University of Notre Dame , Indiana, and moved to the Catholic University of America , Washington, DC , where he became the first professor of botany at the school and founded the Botanical Garden . After, from 1904 until the end of his life, he worked at the Smithsonian Institution .

His scientific work was related to the study of the flora of the western United States. He published a large number of works on botany and the history of natural science , including the periodicals Pittonia (1887-1905), and Erythea (published since 1893).
