Monsignor Quixote ( Eng. Monsignor Quixote ) - Graham Green's novel (1982) with a touch of comedy, but the author himself belonged to his "serious" novels. [1] Filmed in 1985. In Russian, published in 1989.
Synopsis
The action takes place in Spain after the end of Francoism. Two friends, elderly, lonely people - the Catholic priest Quixote from the town of El Toboso , without his knowledge, promoted to the rank of Monsignor, contrary to the opinion of his own bishop, and the former mayor of the town, the communist Sankas (Sancho) - go to Madrid in Quixote’s father’s car, “ Rosinante ”, talking a lot along the way, and involuntarily fall into a number of situations that compromise the Monsignor. After returning to El Toboso, the bishop imposes reprimand on Monsignor Quixote, who with Sankas go to the monastery in Galicia, and on the way they face a festive procession where the image of Our Lady is entrusted to those who pay the most. Quixote opposes this behavior, regarding it as blasphemy; Sankas takes him out of town, fearing gendarmes. Quixote and Sankas get to the monastery, but gendarmes are shooting at their car, and broken glass wounds Quixote, which dies in the monastery.
