Biography

William Pomeroy was born into a family of workers. In 1937 , he joined the youth organization of the US Communist Party , and the following year he joined the party itself. Since the beginning of the Second World War, he was drafted into the army and participated in the landing of American troops on the Philippine Islands .

There he established contacts with the People’s Anti-Japanese Army of the Communist Party of the Philippines , which fought against the Japanese occupation, and organized for them the transfer of special equipment. In response to the decision of the US military leadership to start fighting against the guerrillas , Pomroy organizes a protest campaign.

At the end of the war, in 1947 , he got a job at the university and met Celia Mariano , whom he married the following year . After the ban of the CPP, they joined the guerrilla war of the Philippine Communist Party against the government. In 1952 , Pomeroy was arrested by the authorities and only ten years later , under national and international pressure, he was released, demanding to leave the country within a month.

After that, Pomeroy returns to the United States , where he is trying to get a passport for Celia Mariano and is releasing her first book of memoirs on guerrilla warfare in the Philippines . As a result of the anti - communist hysteria of the Cold War , not being able to obtain American citizenship for a wife, they move to the UK . There Pomeroy continues to write books and articles on the struggle against colonialism , apartheid and imperialism, and publishes a collection of his poems, some of which were written in prison (Sonnets for Celia, 1963 ).

Until the late 1990s , when this was not hampered by the increasing loss of vision , he wrote articles on the development problems of Africa , Latin America and Europe , but paid the most attention to the Philippines .

Memory

At the XIII Party Conference of the Communist Party of the Communist Party, William Pomeroy and Celia Mariano Pomeroy were elected honorary members of the political bureau of the party.
