Do not confuse with icing indicator .
The icing warning device is a device designed for continuous measurement of the icing intensity of technical means, with the issuance of information to the operator and into the automatic anti-icing system. They are mainly used for icing control of aircraft and turbine blades in industrial plants.

Design and classification of icing warning devices
The structure of icing indicators includes: a sensor that generates a signal about the degree of icing, electronic units for amplifying the signal and processing it according to predetermined criteria, and a device for issuing information to the operator.
Different physical principles can be used in sensors; in accordance with the principle of sensor operation, several types of signaling devices are distinguished:
- Heat-measuring alarms - the temperature of the sensor is kept constant by changing the heater’s power, and depending on the power spent on maintaining the temperature and the temperature of the surrounding air it is calculated whether the sensor is directly in the air or is overgrown with ice;
- Vibration alarms - they measure the frequency of oscillations of the membrane, the amplitude of which decreases when fouling with ice, and therefore their frequency increases. In particular, SO-121 and EW-164 work on this principle;
- Radioisotope signaling devices;
- Optical (optoelectronic) signaling devices;
- Acoustic signaling devices;
- Condenser signaling devices.
As icing sensors on domestic aircraft [ what? ] widely used radioisotope signaling devices of the type RIO-3. The principle of operation of the detector is based on the attenuation of the beta radiation of the radioactive isotope (strontium-90 + yttrium-90) with a layer of ice growing on the sensitive surface of the sensor pin in flight. The radiation power is recorded by a STS-5 type halogen counter, and when it is reduced to a predetermined threshold for operation, the electronic unit generates a “ICE” signal. To reduce the inertia of the circuit, the sensor pin at the entrance to the icing zone is continuously heated by the built-in heating element. Due to the relatively high radioactivity of the sensor on the ground, a red lead plug (or aluminum with fluoroplastic inserts) is put on it.
Examples of icing alarms
- RIO-2M - radioisotope aviation;
- RIO-3 - radioisotope aviation;
- СО-1 - industrial heat meter (for gas turbine units);
- СО-4А - aviation (for engines);
- СО-121 - vibration aircraft;
- ISO-16 - aircraft;
- EW-164 - aircraft.
