Horse antelope [1] , or roan horse antelope [1] ( lat. Hippotragus equinus ) is an African antelope of the subfamily saberrope antelope . With a weight of up to 300 kg and a shoulder height of 1.6 m, it is the second largest antelope in the world after an ordinary cannon .

AppearanceThe horse antelope has a gray-brown coat with a reddish tint and a black and white “mask”. The ears are long, thin and equipped with tufts of hair at the ends. A mane stretches from the back of the head to the back. Both sexes are heavily twisted and describe the curved back semicircle of the horn .

The preferred habitat for equine antelopes is the open savannah , which is overgrown with trees in places, but these animals avoid shorter grass areas where it is difficult to hide from predators. Horse antelopes are found in West , East and South Africa . Sometimes it rises to a height of 2000 m above sea level.
BehaviorGroups of equine antelopes consist of 5-12 individuals and are headed by a male. However, besides him, there is also a leading female, whose task is to search for pastures and places for recreation. Young males form separate bachelor groups. In case of danger, horse antelopes can reach speeds of up to 70 km / h.
NutritionHorse antelopes feed exclusively on grassy vegetation and do not touch the leaves and shoots of shrubs. Algae is sometimes eaten [2] .
ReproductionIn horse antelopes, one cub is born per season, which hides from predators in dense thickets about two weeks after birth.
