History
The 50s of the twentieth century were marked by the intensive development of the radio industry. In Belarus, factories are being built to produce televisions, radios, automation equipment, computers and other equipment for the needs of the national economy. Considering that the radio engineering industry developed at a faster pace than science and personnel training for it, the government decided to create an independent higher education institution - the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute (MRTI).
By a decree of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR, the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute was opened on March 15, 1964. MRTI began with two full-time faculties - the radio engineering and the faculty of automation and computer technology, as well as the general technical faculty consisting of two departments - evening and correspondence.
In 1964, 2500 students studied at the institute. From various cities of the USSR, leading experts who headed the departments were invited to MRTI. 143 faculty members were hired, including 3 doctors of sciences, professors, corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR; 37 candidates of sciences, associate professors; 42 senior teachers, 61 teachers and assistant.
In ten years, the student body has grown to 5200 people, graduate students - up to 120 people. According to the number of full-time students, the institute took the third place in the republic. Three faculties of full-time education have already worked: design and technology of electronic equipment; radio engineering and telecommunications; automation and computer technology. The scientific directions of the departments were formed. Up to 300 developments created by employees, graduate students and students were demonstrated at various exhibitions annually.
The first rector was appointed Ivan Sidorovich Kovalev - doctor of technical sciences, professor, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, a scientist in the field of radio electronics. I. S. Kovalev headed the institute from 1964 to 1972. During this period, the university formed: the administration, the educational department, faculties, departments, the research sector, business services, public organizations. Three buildings of the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute with spacious classrooms and classrooms, a library with reading rooms, a sports complex with a swimming pool, laboratories and workshops equipped with educational and scientific equipment were built. A training computer laboratory and a student computer center were created.
From February 8, 1973 to June 30, 2000, the rector of the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute was Viktor Makarovich Ilyin , candidate of technical sciences, professor, honored worker of the Higher School of the BSSR, academician of the International Academy of Higher Education Sciences, now Honorary Rector of BSUIR. In 1975, MRTI was recognized as the best university in the All-Union review of the introduction of science and technology in the national economy, in 1976 became the winner of the All-Union public review of the use of inventions with the award of the All-Union Central Council of Trade Unions, in 1978, it was awarded the 1st place and the passing Red Banner of the Ministry of Higher and secondary specialized education of the USSR and the Central Committee of the trade union of educators, higher schools and scientific institutions for success in their work.
By resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR N 326 dated March 13, 1987, MRTI was ranked among the leading universities of the USSR for special achievements in the field of scientific research and training specialists.
In the early 90s, the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute became the largest university in the BSSR, which accounted for up to 95% of students in the radio engineering field.
By the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 786 dated November 16, 1993, the Minsk Radio Engineering Institute was transformed into the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio Electronics (BSUIR).
