History

On June 7, 1944, a new educational institution was established - Odessa Higher Naval College (OVMU) [1] [2] .

In 1948, the collective of students and teachers of the Moscow State Optical High School distinguished themselves in the situation of rescue of the motor ship “ Victory ”, on which September 1, 1948 a major fire occurred. On December 30, 1948, Minister of the Navy N.V. Novikov issued an order “On awarding cadets and teachers of the Odessa Higher Naval School who distinguished themselves in the struggle to save passengers and the motor ship Victory” [2] .

In 1954, the school had three faculties (shipbuilding, shipbuilding, electromechanical) and correspondence department [1] .

May 29, 1958 OVMU was renamed the Odessa Higher Marine Engineering School (OVIMU).

On June 7, 1974, in honor of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the OVIMU, the school was awarded the honorary title "named after Lenin Komsomol ."

In 1987, a training vessel was built for the academy - the three-masted sailing frigate " Friendship " (put on joke due to the lack of funding in the early 2000s) [3] .

April 26, 1991 OVIMU was renamed the Odessa State Maritime Academy (OGMA).

September 21, 2002 OGMA was given the status of "National" - Odessa National Maritime Academy (ONMA).

On August 21, 2008, the correspondence faculty was closed at the academy [4] .

On October 6, 2008, a fire broke out in the Practical Harbor of the Odessa Port on the training and production vessel Lesozavodsk of the Odessa National Maritime Academy, as a result of which the vessel was damaged, there were no casualties [5] .

In September 2009, reviewing the behavior of crew members when captured or taken hostage was introduced into the course "Fundamentals of Life Safety" for cadets and students of the academy [6] .

At the end of March 2014, the Sevastopol cadets of the Academy of Naval Forces of Ukraine named after P. S. Nakhimov [7] [8] . In total, more than 20% of the teaching staff and 30% of the cadets left Crimea [9] (according to other sources, 25% of the teaching staff and 40% of the cadets moved to Odessa [10] ).

Subsequently, in accordance with the Decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 163 of June 4, 2014, a naval faculty was formed as part of the academy [10] [11] . Faculty cadets will undergo internships on NATO ships [12]

On June 15, 2015, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine by decree No. 623-r reorganized the Odessa National Maritime Academy into the National University of Odessa Maritime Academy.

On August 25, 2015, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko by his decree supported the proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to maintain the status of "National" at the National University of Odessa Maritime Academy.

University Description

National University "Odessa Maritime Academy" - the highest maritime educational institution of Ukraine, which has international recognition and authority. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the university is accredited at the IV (highest) level.

All engineering specialties of the university are accredited by the Institute of Marine Technology, Science and Technology (IMarEST) of Great Britain. The latest accreditation of engineering specialties was held by IMarEST in June 2018. Validity - 5 years. The specialty Navigation is accredited by the Maritime Institute (NI) of Great Britain.

NU "OMA" is an authoritative member of the International Association of Maritime Universities. Scientists and teachers actively participate in international forums held by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at the UN, leading marine educational and scientific organizations of the world. The university has a quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001-2000 (Bureau Veritas, 2016, 2018).

Over the years, about 40 thousand specialists have been trained at the OMA OMA for the marine fleet of the former USSR, Ukraine, and 45 foreign countries. 8 graduates were awarded the title of Hero of Labor, 5 graduates became laureates of State Prizes, 10 - honored workers of education and science of Ukraine, over 300 graduates were awarded the badge “Honorary Worker of the Navy”.

Scientific schools

The university carries out research on the development of international maritime policy, economics, the national system of maritime education, maritime safety, navigation, technical operation of the fleet; integrated intelligent systems and systems; ship repair technology; technological equipment; technical management; global maritime radiocommunication; systems of navigation equipment and hydrographic support of Ukraine and some others.

In 1991-2006, the Academy completed over 250 scientific developments, defended 17 doctoral and 42 master's theses, published 68 monographs, received 52 copyright certificates and patents.

OU OMA publishes periodical collections of scientific papers included in the list of specialized publications recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine: Navigation, Ship Power Plants, and Automation of Ship Technical Means.

There is a specialized academic council for awarding doctorates and candidates of technical sciences in the specialties "Operation and repair of means of transport", "Ship power plants", "Navigation and control of a ship."
