History

Naves reach forty meters in height

The cathedral was consecrated in the 5th century in honor of St. Stephen , who became popular after gaining his relics in Jerusalem in 415 . Some other French cathedrals are also dedicated to him: Agde , Osersky , Bourgeois , Cahorsky , Chalon-en-champagne , Limoges , Sansky , Tula , Toulouse , the cathedral in Mo. Most of them were built in the fifth century.

Metz has been an episcopal center since the third century. Gregory of Tours [1] noted that St. Stephen’s Cathedral was the only building that survived the ruin of the city by the Huns on April 7, 451 . According to the story of the bishops of Metz, written in 784 by Lombard Benedictine, Pipin Korotky financed the construction carried out under the direction of the bishop by a certain Hrodegang (742–766): a canopy , an altar, a presbytery and an outpatient clinic were built. In 965–984, they were all replaced by new ones in the style of Romanesque architecture . The work was carried out by Bishop Theodorich I under the auspices of the emperors Otto I and Otto II . The new basilica was completed and consecrated in 1040 by his successor, Theodorich II.

The next reconstruction began after two centuries. In 1220, a Gothic-style building was commissioned by Bishop Konrad Sharfenek. It was not completed until about 1520 . The consecration of the new cathedral took place on April 11, 1552 .

In 1764, the Parisian architect Jacques Francois Blondel proposed the reconstruction of the building. The project was supported by the governor of Trois-Evechet, who decided that the Mets should not lag behind Nancy and his square Stanislav . It was decided to build a royal place in front of the Gothic cathedral, for which it was necessary to destroy the facade, the monastery and three attributed temples: Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux, Saint-Pierre-le-majeure and the chapel of the Lorraine house.

Stained-glass windows were made by craftsmen Hermann de Munster in the fourteenth century and Valentin Bush in the sixteenth. In the twentieth century, the artist Marc Chagall produced 19 stained glass windows for the cathedral between 1958 and 1968. Roger Beaissier created the conditions for the further preservation of windows.
