Description
Snake lizards - small (body length up to 20 cm) lizards with an elongated serpentine body (hence the name). The limbs are short, to some extent reduced, with 2–4 fingers. Two species have lost limbs. The body is covered with smooth scales. Eyes are small, with separate movable eyelids. In the lower eyelid there is a transparent disk. The external opening of the ear is very small (inferior in size to the opening of the nostrils) or is completely absent. The muzzle is conical and blunt or wedge-shaped, the mouth opening is slightly covered by the edges of the upper labial shields.
Distributed in southern Europe (in the south of the Balkan Peninsula ), southwest Asia and Central Asia east to Pakistan and northwest India .
Leading digging lifestyle. Rarely appear on the surface, hiding under stones in soil cracks, sand. Some species can "swim" in loose sand, like representatives of the genus Scincus .
