Biography

Born on February 3, 1920 in the village of Ryabtsy, Chernihiv region. After graduating from high school, he worked at a telephone exchange.

In the army since 1939 . In 1940 he graduated from the Volsk Aviation Technical School. Since June 1941, he was at the front. He fought on the Western , North-Western , Stalingrad , Southern and 4th Ukrainian fronts.

By April 1944, made 100 sorties. He stormed the fortifications, crossings, airfields, clusters of enemy troops. The title of Hero of the Soviet Union was awarded on October 26, 1944.

He fought in East Prussia, where he was part of the 75th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment , the 1st Guards Assault Aviation Division , the 1st Air Army, and the 3rd Belorussian Front . February 15, 1945 his plane was shot down near the city of Heiligenbayl (now Mamonovo, Kaliningrad region ). Zhabinsky repeated Gastello’s feat: he directed his wrecked plane to enemy aircraft located at the airport [1] .

He was buried in a mass grave in Mamonovo .

Hero's memory

  • Streets are named after the Hero in the city of Chernigov, the village of Ryabtsy, Chernihiv region, and in the city of Mamonovo, a trawler of the Ministry of Fisheries. In the city of Chernihiv, a monument was erected at the old cemetery [1] .
  • In Chernigov, in memory of D. I. Zhabinsky, an annotation board was installed.
  • The name of D. I. Zhabinsky is immortalized at the memorial in Volsk.
