City of Evil ( Russian: City of Evil ) is the third studio album by Avenged Sevenfold , released in June 2005. According to vocalist Matt Shadous, the idea of recording an album not entirely built on extreme singing was not spontaneous and was related to the group’s desire to develop professionally. The album debuted at number 30 on the Billboard 200 , and in 2009 received platinum status. With sales of 1.5 million copies in the United States and 2.5 million beyond, the album is considered the most commercially successful album in the discography.
