Biography

Club career

Diego Perez in 2011.

He began his professional career at Defensor Sporting Club at the age of 19. In 2003, he transferred to the camp of one of the two grandees of the Uruguayan football club Peñarol . For the “yellow-black” Perez managed to play only 13 matches when he received an invitation from Didier Deschamps to play for “ Monaco ” [2] . In the first seasons, Diego was forced to fight for a place at the base with other defensive midfielders ( Andreas Zikos , Lucas Bernardi ), but in the 2005/2006 season he became a solid player in the base of the Monegasques. On October 25, 2007, Perez extended the contract with Monaco until the end of the 2010/11 season [3] .

On August 31, 2010, Perez moved to the Italian club Bologna , which paid Diego 3.5 million euros [4] . Diego signed a three-year contract, and after it concluded a new agreement with Bologna for a period of two years [5] .

Team appearances

Perez has been playing for the Uruguayan national team since 2001 and is currently one of the most experienced players in Celeste . He played in four America's Cups - 2001 (when he made his debut in a T-shirt of the national team), 2004 , 2007 and 2011 . In 2010, Perez helped the Uruguayan team reach the semifinals of the World Cup , where they successfully acted in the base zone in conjunction with Ejidio Arevalo Rios .

Acting as a defensive midfielder, Diego is not distinguished by a large number of goals against opponents (especially after the start of the European phase of his club career). For the Uruguayan national team, Perez managed to score his first goal only in the 68th match, 10 years after his debut in the national team. This happened in the quarterfinals of the America's Cup 2011 in a match against Argentina . It is noteworthy that Perez was removed in the first half of that game, but, despite this, the Uruguayans managed to win in the penalty shoot-out [6] .

Diego Perez ranks fifth in the history of the Uruguayan national team in the number of matches played.
