In 1803, Mary Ann Clark became the mistress of Frederick Augustus , Duke of York and Albany , commander in chief of the British Army. In the same year, it became known about her scandalous sales of officer ranks in the British army. The duke was forced to resign, but was later found not guilty and reinstated. In 1813, Mary Ann Clark was sentenced to prison.
After her release, she lived in France , where she became famous for her literary salon. Mary Ann Clarke is the grandmother of the cartoonist George Dumorier and the great-great-grandmother of the writer Daphne Dumorier , who wrote the book “Mary Ann” about her.
