About the album
Breakfast in America was recorded in 1978 at the Village Recorder studio in Los Angeles. The disc includes four hit singles of the group: “The Logical Song” (# 6), “Goodbye Stranger” (# 15), “Take the Long Way Home” (# 10) and the title track (# 16).
The relationship between Roger Hodgson and Rick Davis has escalated to the limit. During an interview that Hodgson gave in one of the episodes of “In the Studio with Redbeard”, he stated: “Rick didn’t like the song“ Breakfast In America “and he didn’t want to see it on the album. Moreover, he did not want the album to bear the same name ... ”Davis planned to name the album“ Hello Stranger ”.
Album cover - view of New York from the airplane window. The cover design was designed by Mike Doud, Kate Murtagh portrayed the Statue of Liberty holding a glass of orange juice, instead of a torch, the city is made of ashtrays, mugs, boxes, bottles, painted white. The Twin Towers are two columns of boxes, and the breakfast plate is Battery Park, the departure point for the ferry to Liberty Island. The photograph on the back of the cover shows musicians having breakfast and reading newspapers. Photo taken at a diner called Bert's Mad House.
In 1980, the album received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Recording Package, leaving behind albums such as In Through the Out Door Led Zeppelin and Fear Of Music Talking Heads .
The album is full of compositions built on keyboard parts, in particular, the Wurlitzer electric piano , vividly reflecting the instrument’s capabilities (for example, the ability to get a different sound, depending on the strength of the keystrokes - this is clearly audible in such compositions as “Child Of Vision” and “ The Logical Song "). This piano was used by the group before, but on this album the instrument plays a crucial and distinctive role.
Breakfast In America is the group's best-selling album - more than 4 million copies have been sold in the United States, more than 20 million worldwide. In the spring and summer of 1979, the album was at the top of the Billboard Pop Albums chart . The album also won first place in Norway, Canada and Australia.
The album was first re-released remastered on Gold CD by MFSL. Another remastered edition of the album was born in June 2002, thanks to A&M , where the original appearance of the disc was restored.
