Life and work

Theo van Reisselberg was the younger brother of the architect Octave van Reusselberg [5] . The future artist studied with James Ensor at the Brussels Academy of Arts . His teacher at the academy was Jean-Francois Portel , oriental artist, representative of classicism and romanticism . Theo The Van Resselberg's early works exhibited at the Brussels Salon in 1881 point to the influence of Eduard Manet and Edgar Degas .

In 1882, the artist makes a long journey through Spain and Morocco , where he writes exotic paintings. In 1883, he is one of the founders of the XX group , uniting avant-garde artists [6] ; participates in the development of artistic relations between France and Belgium. During one of his trips to Paris, van Rijsselberg met with Georges Seurat and his pointillist painting technique, which had a tremendous influence on the work of the Belgian. Van Reusselberg wrote as a pointillist from 1890 to 1910 . John Rewald described his method of work in this way: “Theo van Risselberg tried to combine dots of different sizes on one canvas, treating the background and other large surfaces with dots larger than those that he used for parts, in particular for model faces; in the latter case, he used tiny dots, enabling finer modeling. With this method, the small dots at a certain distance completely disappeared, while the larger ones were clearly visible ”, In 1897 he moved to Paris. Only after the death of his teacher and friend J. Sera did he gradually move away from pointillism. In 1910, the artist moved to the Mediterranean coast of France and in his last years he painted mainly female nudes - paintings.

In addition to painting, Theo van Reisselberg was engaged in graphic art, in particular, he owns illustrations for the texts of the Belgian poet and playwright, one of the founders of symbolism Emil Verharn . Similarly, using initials, arabesques and illustrations, van Reisselberg adorns some catalogs of the XX Society exhibition.

At the end of his life, the artist also turned to portrait sculpture, working on the bronze head of Andre Gide .

Van Reisselberg died in Saint-Clair on December 14, 1926 and was buried in the Le Lavandou cemetery , next to his friend, the artist Henri-Edmond Cross .

Most of the work of one of the greatest neo-Impressionist artists is still kept in private collections, and they can be seen quite rarely. In November 2005, the work of Theo Van Reisselberg's “Port De Cette” (1892) was sold for a record 2.6 million euros at Sotheby's auction in New York.
