The name “ Kayak ” was given in 1826 by Lieutenant Starichev of the Russian Navy because of the apparent similarity of the profile with the Eskimo boats . It is believed that in 1741 Vitus Bering saw this island and called it “Saint Ilya”.

According to the US National Park Service, “Here is the naturalist George W. Steller, aboard St. Peter "Vitus Bering, made the first attempts to establish contacts between Europeans and the indigenous inhabitants of Alaska. His research is the first contribution to Western knowledge about the history of nature and the people of the region. ” [1]

Captain James Cook visited the island on May 12, 1778 , and buried a bottle of paper and two small pieces of silver given to him for this purpose by Dr. Kay, chaplain of George III . Because of this, Captain Cook gave the island the name Kaya Island. Also, Don I. Ortega on July 16, 1779 , was named “Nuestra Senora del Carmen” or “Isla del Carmen”, which means “Virgin Mary of Carmen” or “Carmen Island”, since her day was celebrated on July 16.

The landing site of the Bering expedition in 1978 was declared a National Historic Landmark [1] [2] and is included in the list of national historical monuments of Alaska . Cape St. Elijah is located on the southwestern tip of the island. Mount St. Elias - the second largest peak in the United States and Canada - was named after this cape.

The island also houses the Lighthouse of Cape St. Elijah, important for navigation .
