Biography

Yoswani Terry Cabrera was born in Camaguey , Cuba in 1972.

He made his first musical steps with his father Eladio "Don Pancho" Terry, a violinist and virtuoso checker. His father is also known as the founder and director of the famous Cuban charanga orchestra. Terry Cabrera received classical music education from Yoswani at the prestigious National School of Art (ENA) and at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory.

Back in Cuba, Yoswani gained popularity thanks to its innovative performance and collaboration with such legends as Chucho Valdes , Silvio Rodriguez , Fito Páez and Cubanismo , as well as for working in his own Columna B team .) . Their collective became the voice of young Cuban jazz players. The Columna B group became his experimental laboratory, where Yoswani experimented with everything that captured his imagination. “ Working at Columna B , ” said Terry, “ we learned to incorporate our intuition and bring our performing skills to perfection .” Together with the Columna B group, Yoswani began to travel with performances to the USA and Europe, and in 1998 was invited by Arts International (through the Ford Foundation) to the Stanford Jazz Festival.

In 1999, Yoswani moved to New York and immediately received recognition in jazz circles for his outstanding talent, where he played with Roy Hargrove, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Dave Douglas ( Dave Douglass), by Jeff Watts of Tain, Horacio Hernandez of El Negro, and double bass player Avishay Cohen. Terry himself admitted - “ My move to New York was the impetus that I needed as a musician. After moving, I got access to a limitless source of information and the opportunity to communicate with famous musicians from around the world. "

Always learning, Terry absorbed the traditions of American jazz, and, diluting them with his own Afro-Cuban heritage, began to create solo and collective works combining rhythmic avant-garde and sugary-melodic poetry of Latin music. His voice and style are unique and inimitable, and his quintet, having absorbed the musical traditions of Cuba and America, gave out an incomparable sound of new music.

Yoswani Terry Cabrera’s recently released album, Metamorphosis , contains everything he learned in New York, Yoswani himself says about it: “ The sound I tried to achieve in this album is the result of my experience at the beginning of my musical career in Cuba and the musical diversity that I encountered in New York. "

This album is a kind of "art gallery" containing paintings reflecting the moments of his life in Cuba and New York. At the same time, there is a palette of flowers and paints collected everywhere where the musician managed to visit during his musical tours around the world. “ Undoubtedly, when you attend concerts, read books, watch films, or simply admire the beauty that surrounds you, you try to comprehend everything you have heard and seen, and then, passing through the prism of your perception, the world experiences a kind of“ Metamorphosis “ ” Terry says about his album “ Metamorphosis ”(English) released in 2005.

In the recording of the album "Metamorphosis" (English) participated:
