Biography

The prince was the son of Honore IV and Louise d'Omont, Duchess of Mazarin , his older brother Honore V was his predecessor on the throne of Monaco .

He married on November 27, 1816, in Commerce , Maria Carolina Giber de Lemets (1793-1879). Children:

  • Charles III (1818-1889)
  • Florestina Gabriella Antoinette (1833–1897)

Florestan was not regarded as the heir to the throne. In his youth, he was an actor in the theater "De l'Ambigou-Comique", but after the death of his older brother Honore V received the title of prince. The real power was in the hands of his wife Carolina, a woman smart and energetic. She, together with her husband, managed to fix the financial affairs of the principality. Given the tense political situation in Europe in the middle of the XIX century and following the democratic mood of the people, Florestan twice tried to enact the Constitution , but both times the attempt was unsuccessful. The inhabitants of Menton were especially unhappy. Finally, in 1848 Florestan decided to abdicate in favor of Carl's son, but it was too late. The cities of Menton and Roquebrune proclaimed themselves free. Thus, Monaco lost 80% of its territory. Until 1861, the political status of these cities remained uncertain until, finally, Monaco officially transferred them to France. Despite all the works of Florestan, the prospects for the development of the principality remained very vague [2] .

He was buried in the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Monaco.
