Story

The plot is based on real events that took place in Georgia in the 90s of the XX century. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a civil and ethnic war begins in the Caucasus, turning a prosperous land into one large, flaming zone of ethnic conflict.

1992, war in Abkhazia. After a trip to Karabakh and a conflict with his father, Georgy leaves for the war zone, where he serves with Spartak, a sniper from Sukhumi, who immediately kills the separatists who were captured so that others would not beat them to death. The general leading the detachment asks George and Spartak to go to Tbilisi or Karabakh and get the shells for the guns. But George refuses, citing injuries, and the principal Spartak is not going to go anywhere until he kills the woman sniper on the side of the separatists, shooting his colleagues in the groin. But the general urgently needs shells, which can be obtained in Karabakh thanks to the ties of George with Colonel Nuriev. George himself does not go, but gives Spartak the address of Gogliko in Tbilisi and asks to visit Yana. In exchange, Spartak leaves George his rifle and asks for the head of a separatist sniper for him.

Arriving in Tbilisi, Spartak discovers that Gogliko became a heroin addict, and Yana is engaged in prostitution after she was abandoned by George. At first, Gogliko mistook Spartak for the recruiting officer, but he explains to him that he urgently needs to get shells for howitzers and take them to Abkhazia. Gogliko himself also has problems - he must urgently repay the debt to the bandits, otherwise they will deal with him. On the way to the tank farm, Gogliko begins to make fun of Spartak’s name, for which he breaks his nose with sharp braking and promises to strangle him if Gogliko does not shut up. The director of the tank farm does not want to give them money, but Gogliko promises to take the toy horse for his grandson from him and take him to the front instead of shells, mentioning that the director threw the general. The frightened director immediately gives Spartak and Gogliko money for shells, which the latter offers to divide into two, and spend his share on heroin. An enraged Spartak puts a gun to Gogliko’s head and offers him to give money or be killed. He notes that if Spartak does not shoot him, they will still kill the bandits to whom he owes and decides not to go to Karabakh. Spartak persuades Gogliko to deal with the bandits and, when the debt is returned, takes the money from the bandits who promise to kill them both if they find it. In gratitude, Gogliko takes Spartak to a party, where he has sex with one of the visitors right on the street. At night, they continue their journey to Karabakh for shells, while bandits look for them all over Tbilisi. In a roadside eatery, Spartak says he was not going to go to war until his sister's husband joined the separatists and burned down his house in Sukhumi, inherited from his father.

Having reached Karabakh, Spartak and Gogliko meet with Colonel Nuriev, who says that he cannot sell or give them shells. The colonel tirelessly scolds Gogliko, who comes to Karabakh three times a year for heroin and offers Spartak shells in exchange for the service of blowing up the railway bridge from Georgia to Armenia so that the oil trains from Georgia cannot reach their destination. Spartak and Gogliko agree to this deal and undermine the bridge. At the site of the bombing, the careless Gogliko loses George’s military ID with his photo. Having fulfilled their obligations, they return to Tbilisi and decide to relax in the sulfur baths, where they stumble upon the bandits from whom Spartak took the money. Then they visit Yana, who is pregnant by George. Spartak advises Gogliko to stop using drugs and give Yana the money saved from a deal with Azerbaijanis. At this point, bandits shoot their car and kill Spartak. Surviving Gogliko decides to take the shells to Abkhazia and see George.

Georgy, who has sat down in the forest, is finally shooting down the separatist sniper whose head Spartak so wanted. Carrying her to his detachment, he sees Spartak's truck approaching, from which Gogliko leaves. Astonished George thinks that Spartak brought Gogliko to Abkhazia and asks him to guard the wounded sniper. He gives her a shot of heroin and begins a philosophical conversation with her, discussing how beautiful she is and how good a mother she could be in a peaceful life. Then he promises to stop using drugs and even confesses his love to her, not noticing that the sniper is dead. Approaching George and his colleagues ask Gogliko where is Spartak. He informs them of the death of their sniper, who is buried near the front line. George is trying to send Gogliko to Tbilisi, but he refuses and advises him to go to the capital himself, since Yana is expecting a child from George. George leaves the Spartak Gogliko rifle, and he leaves. The approaching general puzzles Gogliko because the shells he brought in do not fit the guns and asks to go to Karabakh again to bring the suitable guns.
