Black's Law Dictionary

Black's Law Dictionary or “ Black's Law Dictionary ” (published in the United States in English ) is traditionally considered an authoritative legal dictionary in the field of US law . It was founded by Henry Campbell Black . In many cases examined by the US Supreme Court, he was referred to as a secondary source of law . The latest edition, including brief and pocket-sized versions, is a useful starting point for non-lawyers or students when they come across a completely unfamiliar legal term. This is the preferred reference material for definitions in the case file and court findings.

Dictionary Edition History

The first edition of the dictionary was published in 1891 , and the second in 1910 . In the sixth and all earlier editions of the book, quotes from court cases were cited in relation to the cited term, which some lawyers considered the most useful function of the dictionary. The Internet greatly facilitated the finding of legal information, therefore, in the seventh edition ( 1999 ) of the dictionary, many quotes of court decisions were removed at the state or judicial district level, as well as those that lost their meaning and were canceled. The eighth edition first introduced a system of constantly updated quotes of court decisions and cross-references to legal encyclopedias. In the summer of 2009, the ninth edition of the dictionary was published.

Since many legal terms are derived from the root of the Latin language , the dictionary provides rules for the pronunciation of such terms. In addition, transcription is provided in the relevant dictionary entries.

To date, nine editions of the dictionary have been published:

  • Black's Law Dictionary, 1st ed. - St. Paul: West Publishing Co., 1891. - 1253 p.
