.338 Lapua Magnum ( 8.6 × 70 mm , .338 LM , SAA 4640 ) [1] - a special sniper cartridge for shooting at long distances, today it is also widely used by hunters and shooters-athletes. The aim of the development of the cartridge was to create ammunition and a rifle under it with the possibility of predictable shooting at the “growth target” up to 1800 m, that is, a rifle capable of firing further than .300 WM and at the same time easier than rifles under the cartridge .50 BMG. The best predicted firing range for the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is up to 1,500 m. The .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is intermediate between .300 WM (7.62 × 67 mm) and .408 Cheyenne Tactical (10.3 × 77 mm) sniper ammunition.

History
In 1983, the U.S. Department of Defense set the task of developing a new cartridge for sniper shooting. Jerry Haskins of Research Armament Industries (RAI), Jim Bell, and Boots Obermeyer developed an 8.6 mm cartridge based on the .416 Rigby cartridge, but he found that the cartridge was deformed due to the high pressure of the powder gases. The Finnish company Lapua (a division of the Norwegian company Nammo [2] ) solved this problem by creating an almost new reinforced cartridge case, and in 1987 began commercial production of cartridges under the designation .338 Lapua Magnum. Currently, the production of .338 Lapua Magnum is also carried out by the Swedish company Norma Precision [1] , Czech Sellier & Bellot [3] , Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant [4] , Novosibirsk Cartridge Plant [5] (Russia).
Bullet Types
After the release of the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge on the market in 1989, he had only one type of bullet, however, after 1996 other types of bullets began to appear, which expanded the range of use of this cartridge:
- Partition - expansive bullet with a composite core
- SP - semi-shell
- HPBT - hollow point boat tail (with a cavity in the nose of the bullet and the conical tail)
- FMJBT - sheathed with a tapered tail (Lock Base)
- FMJ - full metal shell bullet (shell bullet)
Bullet weight from 231 to 300 grains (from 15 to 19.4 g).
Application
The main niche for the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is long-range sniper shooting. High accuracy (0.5 MOA ) and a flat trajectory of the bullet allow for effective aimed fire up to 1500 meters and beyond.
The .338 LM cartridge is used, for example, in M98, M98B Bravo sniper rifles, in Remington, Weatherby, Sako, Blaser, Mannliher, HS Precision, Keppeler, Accuracy International, B&T AG rifles and others, as well as in Russian weapons rifles firms " ORSIS " and " Tsar Cannon ".
Cartridge fighting qualities
The expansive bullet of the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge has a very powerful lethal and stopping effect:
- The .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge with an expansive bullet is suitable for many large and dangerous animals, such as: a bear of all types and sizes, various large representatives of the cat family, crocodiles , large ungulates , etc.;
- The cartridge .338 Lapua Magnum of all types of bullets is unsuitable or unsuitable for very large and dangerous African animals, such as: elephants , rhinos , rhinos , hippos , etc.;
The bullet of the .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge is capable of penetrating any, even heavy body armor, as well as various barriers (concrete fences, steel sheet (St3) up to 24 mm thick).
