The camera has a matrix with a crop factor of 1.6 ( APS-C format) and allows the use of EF-S lenses designed for matrices of this size. EOS 7D was the first EOS family camera to feature a built-in level , a wireless transmitter for controlling external flash units and a number of new features for controlling video recording [4] . The new autofocus system, taking into account the position of the camera, has been announced by the manufacturing company as the most advanced of all ever used in Canon EOS family of cameras. For the first time, Canon's new metering system takes into account color information [2] .

The video shooting functions are improved in comparison with the previous models of the family, in particular, a fully manual control of shutter speed and aperture has appeared . EOS 7D was used as a digital movie camera when shooting a number of popular movies , including Black Swan [5] , 127 hours [6] and Avengers [7] .

EOS 7D has become one of the company's longest-lived digital cameras, remaining an actual model for about five years until the appearance of the heir - EOS 7D Mark II .

Content

Positioning

At the time of the introduction of the Canon EOS 7D, the Canon EOS family of digital cameras consisted of four lines:

  1. professional cameras EOS-1D ;
  2. full-frame cameras for enthusiastic photographers and trained amateurs, the latest model for 2009 was the Canon EOS 5D Mark II ;
  3. cameras with an APS-C format matrix ( crop factor 1.6) and with a two-digit numerical index of the model, designed for experienced amateur enthusiasts, the latest model was the Canon EOS 50D ;
  4. amateur models with an APS-C format matrix, denoted by a three- or four-digit index [8] .

EOS 7D became the most technically equipped Canon camera with an APS-C format matrix, replacing the EOS 50D model that appeared a year earlier. However, 7D did not succeed the 50D, but opened a new line in the EOS family [8] [9] . This is also indicated by the designation of the model with a single-digit index and the difference in cost: the recommended price of 50D on the official website of Canon USA in 2008-2009 was 1199 US dollars for the version without a lens, and 7D - 1699 dollars.

The Canon company defines 7D as an uncompromising camera for serious photographers and as a second camera for professionals working in non-studio environments [2] .

Creation History

At the design stage of 7D, Canon conducted a survey of more than 5,000 photographers from around the world in order to find out how they see their dream camera, what ideas can be embodied in the new model. Photographers with different capabilities and different backgrounds were interviewed; according to one of the leaders of the camera development department of Kenichi Sinbori company, it was important in order to understand what different people are looking for for themselves in the camera [4] .

The innovations embodied in the camera as a result of this study include, among other things, a large viewfinder, protection of the case from dust and moisture, as well as buttons that allow you to work with the camera in gloves [4] .

Innovations

The Canon EOS 7D has received a number of features new to the entire Canon EOS family, including professional models. According to Yuichi Ishizuki, senior vice president of Canon USA, the new model has become the most equipped and innovative of all digital SLR cameras of the company [2] .

Autofocus One of the main innovations is the brand-new 19-point autofocus system for brand cameras. All 19 points are cruciform, that is, they make it possible to aim at objects that are contrasting in either of the two planes, horizontal or vertical. At the same time, the center point has increased accuracy when using lenses with aperture of f / 2.8 or more thanks to additional diagonal sensors. In Spot AF mode, the used size of the focusing sensor is reduced, which allows you to precisely aim at very small objects and successfully function in difficult conditions, for example, when shooting animals that are in a cage. It is possible to “capture” a moving object of any of the points and track it with automatic switching of points (previous modules could “capture” an object only with a central point). The AF Point Switching function allows you to configure two different points for the horizontal and vertical positions of the camera with automatic switching between them when changing position.

The camera automatically recognizes the installed macro lens and changes the focus algorithm in AI Servo mode, adjusting to object vibrations and involuntary movements of the photographer.

Exposure metering. The new 63-zone iFCL metering system for the first time for EOS cameras takes into account not only the brightness of the light, but also its color, allowing to achieve stable results under various light sources.

Wirelessly control external flash units. For the first time ever, Canon cameras have the ability to wirelessly control external Speedlites . The camera flash has a built-in transmitter, which eliminates the need for a separate external transmitter. It is possible to control three groups of flashes; each of the groups can consist of four flashes.

Button block

Buttons. The Canon EOS 7D control buttons are designed for easy use with gloves on. New buttons are added: Quick Control gives you access to the quick settings menu using the LCD located on the rear panel, RAW / JPEG allows you to quickly enable recording of the picture in maximum quality, a separate video control button. The possibilities for reassigning the functions of buttons in 7D are wider than in previous models.

Viewfinder. For the first time in a nonprofessional model of the Canon EOS family, a viewfinder with one hundred percent frame coverage was used [10] . The built-in liquid crystal display in the viewfinder displays focusing points and areas, grid lines and the circle of the spot metering area. The display may be lit in low light conditions. The display of additional information may be disabled.

Electronic level. Canon EOS 7D became the first camera of the brand, which used an electronic level . The biaxial level captures deviations from the horizontal (rotation of the optical axis clockwise and counterclockwise) and from the vertical (tilt forward and backward). Deviation is displayed on the LCD in real-time preview mode or by highlighting the focus points in the viewfinder.

Movie control button

Videography. The ability to shoot video - and immediately in Full HD format - first appeared on the 5D Mark II for EOS models, and then was offered in the amateur model 500D . However, 7D, being the third model with this feature in the family, has a number of fundamentally new video shooting capabilities for Canon EOS.

For more convenient and efficient shooting control, a separate button has been added to switch to the real-time preview mode and start / stop video recording. For the first time, a fully manual control of shutter speed and aperture during video shooting appeared. Unlike previous models, it became possible to choose a frame rate compatible with both the NTSC system and the PAL system [4] :

  • 1920 × 1080 - 29.97; 25 or 23,976 frames per second,
  • 1280 × 720 - 59.94 or 50 frames / s,
  • 640 × 480 - 59.94 or 50 frames / s.

However, the ability to set the sound recording level appeared only with the release in 2012 of firmware version 2  - and then only before the start of shooting, but not in the process. Also, the camera does not have a headphone jack (first appeared for the EOS in the 5D Mark III model), which makes it impossible to control the sound recording quality.

Model Features

Body and mechanics

Canon EOS 7D without a lens

The camera has a housing with protection against moisture and dust, which distinguishes it from younger models. According to the manufacturer, the level of protection corresponds to that of the professional film model Canon EOS-1N , manufactured in the 1990s [4] . Canon 5D Mark II also has body protection, but its level is not specified.

The arrangement of buttons to the left of the display under the thumb of the left hand is similar to the 5D Mark II and distinguishes the 7D from the 50D, in which the buttons are located under the display [8] .

The built-in flash covers an angle equivalent to the viewing angle of lenses with a focal length of 15 mm, without restricting the use of the new Canon EF-S 15-85mm lens . Previous models with APS-C format matrices have a coverage angle corresponding to a focal length of 17 mm, while the 5D Mark II has no built-in flash.

The menu of the camera. Highlighted Battery Information Section

Like the 5D Mark II, the new camera uses an LP-E6 battery, which transfers additional information to the camera. The camera remembers the last few used batteries and stores information about the remaining charge of each of them [11] .

Electronics

The Canon EOS 7D has an APS-C format CMOS sensor , developed for this camera and later used in a number of models: 550D , 60D , 600D and, in a revised form, the 650D and EOS M. The resolution of 17.9 million pixels was a record for the matrices of this format at the time of the appearance of the model, and for two years only other models of the EOS family had the same high resolution [12] . Only in August 2011, Sony NEX-7 and Sony SLT-A77 cameras were introduced, which received an APS-C format matrix with a resolution of 24 million pixels, and in September the Samsung NX200 mirrorless camera with a 20 megapixel sensor was introduced.

EOS 7D set a record not only in resolution, but also in the number of photosensitive elements for APS-C format matrices. This record was surpassed by the Sigma SD1 camera (presented in 2010, on sale from June 2011 [13] ), whose matrix has a size of 24 × 16 mm and contains three layers of photosensitive elements with 14.8 million pixels each, that is, their total number is approximately 44 million

For the first time, the camera uses two processors for non-professional Canon models. The maximum shooting speed of 8 frames / s was a record for non-professional SLR cameras of the company until the advent of the 7D Mark II [10] .

Thanks to the use of two DIGIC 4 processors, the conditional information processing speed reached a record value for the EOS series of 239 conventional megabits per second (5184 × 3456 pixels × 14 bit / pixel × 8 frames / s). For comparison, the 1Ds Mark III professional model, which was released at the time of the appearance of 7D, processes data at a speed of 175 Mbps, 1D Mark III - 168 Mbps. Only the next professional model, Canon EOS-1D Mark IV , also equipped with two DIGIC 4 processors, provided a faster processing speed.

Interface and Settings

B - slow shutter speed mode

The camera allows you to edit information about the author directly in the camera interface. In earlier models, this is only possible when connected to a computer [14] . For the first time for Canon EOS, exposure can be adjusted within a range of ± 5 steps [15] .

Like the 5D Mark II, the new model has a separate B mode (bulb, “bulb”) for shooting with a slow shutter speed .

Competitors

Nikon D300s - the main competitor to Canon EOS 7D

The only direct competitor to the Canon EOS 7D with its recommended retail price in the US of $ 1,700 [2] was the Nikon D300s presented a month earlier (the recommended price in the US at the beginning of September 2009 was $ 1,800 [16] [17] ).

The competitors' models closest in functionality in 2009 were inferior in equipment and speed of shooting, possessed matrices with lower resolution and were noticeably cheaper: this is the Olympus E-3 ($ 1,300 [18] ) and subsequently succeeded by the Olympus E-5 , and Pentax K-7 ($ 1,300 [19] ) and its successors: Pentax K-5 and Pentax K-5 II .

Almost two years after the announcement of 7D, it was introduced in August 2011, and in October Sony SLT-A77 went on sale - a camera with a resolution of 24 million pixels and a shooting speed of up to 12 frames per second. According to its characteristics, it stood out at that time against the background of all other unprofessional cameras, including the EOS 7D. Later, this model was replaced by an even more equipped Sony SLT-A77 II .

Strengths and weaknesses

Compared to the most equipped cameras of other brands that have APS-C format matrices and released before October 2011, Canon EOS 7D has the following advantages [14] [20] [21] :

  • 18 million pixels versus a maximum of 16 for other models.
  • Best detail and resolution at low ISO.
  • The shooting speed is 8 frames / s versus 7 frames / s with the Nikon D300s as standard (D300s provides 8 frames / s when using the MB-D10 battery grip).
  • Flexible autofocus system.
  • Wirelessly control external flash units.

At the same time, according to a number of characteristics, the 7D loses to the most technically equipped non-professional models of other brands:

  • The lack of a matrix stabilization system, unlike the Pentax, Olympus, Sony models.
  • The presence of only one slot for memory cards, unlike the Nikon, Olympus models.
  • The ability to change the focusing screen, not provided by the manufacturer, unlike the Pentax and Olympus models, as well as the Canon EOS 50D and 60D.
  • Lack of autofocus backlight.

It is also noted that the camera has an unreliable automatic white balance under artificial lighting and has a tendency to overexposure in contrasting scenes [14] [20] [21] .

A canon matrix with a crop factor of 1.6 provides a smaller viewing angle when using the same lenses compared to matrices with a crop factor of 1.5, which have competing models from Nikon, Pentax and Sony. This circumstance does not allow to fully use the capabilities of wide-angle lenses of third-party manufacturers. For example, when using a Sigma 10mm F2.8 EX DC HSM Fisheye lens, the diagonal angle of view on a Nikon camera is 180 °, and on a Canon camera it is 167 ° [22] .

Known issues with the camera

During the production and sale of Canon EOS 7D, this model had various shortcomings, the cause of which, as a rule, was incorrect operation of the firmware . Most of them have been fixed in new firmware versions.

Failures of electronics and mechanics Error 40 [23] (according to one version, the error is caused by a structural defect, due to which a screw is screwed out from the vibrations to fix the lower DC-DC board, subsequently closing one of the camera’s power paths, and the other is connected to the problematic sc901524 chip, according to the third, it has an unknown nature, but it manifests itself in temperature extremes and especially in frost), Error 30 [24] , matrix overheating during operation.

The camera has been released for a long time, and since 2010. They decided to reduce the cost of production of the camera, and instead of the metal rod, the mode wheels began to put plastic. As a result, the cameras did not fulfill their warranty period and returned for repair.

Unnatural video colors. In earlier versions of the firmware there was a defect, under some conditions, leading to an unnatural color of the videos made by the camera. The problem was fixed in version 1.0.9 [25] [26] .

Traces of the previous image on the frame. Shortly after the start of sales of 7D, the effect of the appearance of traces of the previous image was discovered, which occurs in the continuous shooting mode. The effect was not noticeable during normal exposures and was manifested, for example, in the case of exposure correction during post-processing.

The defect was recognized by the manufacturer [27] and fixed in the firmware starting from version 1.1.0 [26] [28] .

Defective focus sensors. In February 2011, the company announced that peripheral focus sensors do not work fully with some old lenses: instead of working like cruciform ones, they respond to contrasting objects both vertically and horizontally, they work as linear [29] .

The problem also affected some modern Tamron lenses. This disadvantage is inherent not only to 7D, but also to models 40D , 50D and 60D [30] .

Special Versions and Upgrades

Canon EOS 7DSV

On August 17, 2010, Canon introduced the Canon EOS 7DSV, the studio version of the camera. There are two differences from the standard version: the ability to lock various functions in the camera menu and the ability to work with a barcode scanner using the Canon Barcode Solution.

The lock function allows the camera administrator to turn off some features and settings in the menu to "ensure professional studio photographers work comfortably with reliable and reproducible results."

Canon Barcode Solution is designed to organize data during the shooting and processing. When shooting, a barcode corresponding to a particular client is read, and the corresponding information is recorded in EXIF . To use Barcode Solution, the WFT-E5 Wireless Transmitter is required, to which a separately purchased barcode reader is connected. For the WFT-E5 module to work with barcodes, it is necessary to update its firmware in the service center, while losing the ability to record GPS data.

The official price of the Canon EOS 7D Studio Version is $ 1829, which is $ 130 more than the cost of a regular EOS 7D. A kit with the WFT-E5 module, ready to work with a barcode scanner, is offered for $ 2599 [34] .

Replacing the Mode Selector Wheel

In December 2010, “Canon” offered users of the Canon EOS 7D and Canon EOS 5D Mark II a paid service for replacing the shooting mode selection wheel. The new wheel is distinguished by a centrally located button that you must press and hold to change the mode, as is implemented in the Canon EOS 60D [35] model introduced in August 2010 and later in the Canon EOS 5D Mark III model.

Firmware

The firmware can be updated by the user independently using personal computers running Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows (XP and above). The first Canon EOS 7Ds came with firmware version 1.0.7 [36] . Subsequently, the company released updates; in April 2011, version 1.2.5 was released, which remained relevant for more than a year.

Version 2.0

On June 28, 2012 it was announced, and on August 7, firmware version 2.0.0 was published, which includes significant changes compared to earlier versions.

It was possible to significantly increase the number of shots in a series with high-speed shooting in RAW format: from 15 to 25. Added support for the GP-E2 GPS receiver , which connects to the camera via a USB connector, support for time zones appeared in the menu. It became possible to manually adjust the sound level when shooting video and select the maximum ISO value (in the range from 400 to 6400 instead of a single value of 3200 earlier) when shooting with automatic sensitivity setting [37] .

The update also added features that were first introduced by the Canon EOS 60D to the menu: converting RAW files to JPEG (only for files shot at maximum resolution [38] ), decreasing the resolution of JPEG files. It became possible to assign each photo a rating from zero to five, and then use it to view pictures in the camera and for the slide show function. When viewing the pictures taken, quick access to numerous functions appeared using the Q button ( Quick Control ).

In the new version, the user can control the names of the created files: if earlier all the names started with the IMG_ prefix, followed by a serial number from 0000 to 9999, now you can specify four other characters (digits, Latin letters, underscore) or specify the first three characters , and as the fourth letter will be added corresponding to the resolution of the photo: S, M or L.

Another improvement was the increased scroll speed of the enlarged part of the image [39] .

When upgrading to version 2.0.0 or higher, restoring a previous version (1.2.5 or lower) is not possible.

Since December 2013, version 2.0.5 is relevant.
