Newcastle's Discovery Museum

Discovery Museum was founded in 1934 as the "City Museum of Science and Industry." The collections were housed in a temporary pavilion built in 1929 for the North East Coast Exhibition at the Exhibition Park, in Newcastle-upon-Tyne . It was the first Science Museum of Great Britain outside London.

Over 40 years, the collection and exhibits have grown so that the temporary pavilion could no longer meet the needs of the museum. In 1978, the museum was again transferred to the house of Blandford, the former cooperative wholesale headquarters of the Company in the northern region. Designed by Oliver, Leeson & Wood, this magnificent building from 1899 , was a distribution center for more than 100 cooperative stores throughout the region, and contained extensive storage facilities and offices.

In 1993, the museum was reopened as the Discovery Museum. The current renovation has brought many new exhibits in recent years, for example, the impressive Turbinia , received in 1994 .

In 2004, £ 13 million was spent on renovation, and already in 2005 it was the most popular place in the region - 450000 visitors.
