Headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of Tokyo , 1950

Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP), the post occupied by General Douglas MacArthur (1945-1951) and his successor, Matthew Ridgway (1951-1952), during the occupation of Japan after World War II [ 1] [2] .

In Japan, the term SCAP did not refer only to the personality of the Commander-in-Chief, but to his headquarters ( General Headquarters ( GHQ )) and the staff of officers working there, including not only military officers, but also several thousand American civil servants .

The Australian , British , Indian , Canadian and New Zealand forces, under the command of the Commander-in-Chief, were organized into a separate department known as the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces .
