There are various options for the life of St. Ternan. According to one of them, he was elevated to the rank of bishop-missionary among the Picts by St. Palladium . It is reported that the saint lived in Abernathy and was the founder of a monastery in Culross (Culross), Fife area).
According to another life, Ternan was a monk in Kuros, in one of the monasteries founded by his contemporary, St. Servan or Surf. The Aberdeen Martyrology mentions the "Gospel of Matthew belonging to St. Ternan", placed in a special metal case ( cumdach ), coated with silver and gold "in the Irish manner."
St. Ternan is revered amongst other places in Scotland in the town of Banchory-Ternan in the lower valley of the Dee River and in Arbuthnott . He is also referred to in the Irish Martyrology as Torannan , where he is referred to as a 6th century saint from Scotland. Martyrology of Donegal reports that he was abbot in Bennchor and in Tulach Foirtceirn in Leinster . It is believed that he was a senior contemporary of St. Columbus .
