Vitaliy Ivanovich Edelstein ( April 17 (29), 1881 , Kazan - August 1, 1965 , Moscow ) - Soviet scientist, vegetable grower , honorary member of the All-Union Agricultural Institute (1956), Hero of Socialist Labor (1961).

Biography

In 1902, after graduating from the St. Petersburg Forest Institute , until 1907 he worked in it at the Department of Botany .

In 1907-1913 he was a teacher at the Uman Agricultural School , then the head of the Tula Garden and Garden Station. Since 1916 - professor at the Department of Gardening and Horticulture at the Moscow Agricultural Institute (now the Russian State Agrarian University - Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K.A. Timiryazev ). In 1918, a garden and garden station was founded at the Moscow Agricultural Institute, the management of which was entrusted to the initiator of its organization, V. I. Edelstein [1] .

He took an active part in organizing the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Production (inaccessible link) (VNIIO), where he worked as deputy director for science.

In 1955 he signed the " Letter of Three Hundred ."

His students headed the departments of vegetable growing and horticulture in universities of the country - M.V. Alekseev ( VSHIZO ), M.A. Panov, G.I. Tarakanov (Moscow Agricultural Academy named after K.A. Timiryazev), V. Ya. Borisov (Crimean Agricultural Institute ), A. N. Paponov (Perm Agricultural Institute), L. A. Nikonov (Velikiye Luki Agricultural Institute), and others. He trained thousands of agronomists and vegetable growers.

The author of more than 500 works on the biology of vegetable plants , the technology of their cultivation, methods of producing seedlings.

For the textbook Vegetable Growing (1944), he was awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree (1946).
