Biography
April 3, 1937 entered the fleet as a cadet . August 1, 1939 promoted to lieutenant.
World War II
He served on the light cruisers Leipzig and Nuremberg, and then held staff posts. In the spring of 1940 he was transferred to the submarine fleet. He served on the U-101 submarine, commanded by Ernst Mengersen , in March - November 1941 made 3 military campaigns on it, during which 3 enemy ships were sunk.
From January 1 to February 3, 1942 he commanded the U-101 submarine, from May 6 to June 30, 1942 - U-29 , from July 1 to November 30, 1942 - U-28 , but did not take part in military campaigns.
December 17, 1942 he was appointed commander of the submarine U-953 (Type VII-C), on which he made 7 campaigns (after spending a total of 227 days at sea). Marbach boat was based in Brest (France).
Although Marbach sank only one ship (displacement of 1927 gross tonnage), he proved to be a desperate brave commander and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on July 22, 1944.
On August 3, 1944, after the award ceremony, he was sent to Bremen to oversee the construction of Type XXI boats. December 17 received a U-3014 submarine, but could not take part in hostilities. May 3, 1945 captured. He was released by one of the last submariners in February 1948.
