Defense Meritorious Service Medal (abbreviated as DMSM ) is an award given by the United States Department of Defense to all military branches for non-combat merits or achievements in peacetime [1] .

Content
History
The medal was established on November 3, 1977 by the 39th US President Jimmy Carter (Decree No. 12019 [2] ). The first to be awarded was U.S. Army Major T. Covington ( Terrell G. Covington ).
