History

The newspaper was launched with the direct participation of its first editor-in-chief, Raf Shakirov [4] . Already in the first year of its existence, it became one of the most readable among high-quality daily newspapers [5] . The main competitors of the newspaper considered such publications as Kommersant and Vedomosti [1] . The chief editors of "NEWSPAPERS" were Raf Shakirov (2001–2003) [6] [7] , Mikhail Mikhailin [8] (2003–2005) [9] , Petr Fadeev [10] (2005–2008) [11] , Sergey Muravyov (2009-2010). The owner of the newspaper was the head of the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Combine Vladimir Lisin [12] [13] .

The newspaper published news of politics, business, economics, culture, sports, health care and the latest reports of incidents. Also, the astrological forecast from Valery Ledovskikh, crossword puzzles and TV programs of several Russian channels both for the second half of the day and for a week from Monday to Monday (“ First ”, “ Russia ”, TVC , “ The Third Channel ”, NTV , “ Culture ”, TV-6 / TVS / RTR-Sport , REN-TV and STS , and later also sports channels produced by NTV-Plus ).

As of the end of 2004, the newspaper had a circulation of 7,000 copies [14] . In 2005, the publication switched to full-color printing (before that, the newspaper was published in black and white, and all photographs in it using a specialized computer program acquired a reddish hue) [15] . At the same time, following the global trends in the print press market, it was decided to move to a new edition format. Instead of the former A2 format, it began to appear in a more convenient for the reader and compact A3 format [5] . At the same time, the logo of the publication was changed. It was assumed that in the same year, the non-profit edition would be sold, but no one showed interest in the newspaper from the buyers then [4] . Since October 2005, together with the "Gazeta", an illustrated Friday application has been published, the magazine "Home!" In A4 format on glossy paper and consisting of 64 pages [3] .

During the Ukrainian Orange Revolution in the fall of 2004, the newspaper on its pages reflected the position of Russian right-wing liberal politicians and parties [16] . In the mid-to-late 2000s, newspaper reporters specialized in broad coverage of the Russian political opposition , in particular, the Dissenters' March [10] , the Other Russia coalition [17] and Mikhail Kasyanov , who wanted to take part in the 2008 presidential election [18 ] . An interview with Leonid Nevzlin, a former manager of the Yukos oil company, was published [19] . The publication of an interview with Eduard Limonov in the issue of April 5, 2007 caused a negative reaction from part of Russian political figures and parties [20] [21] . In October 2007, the publication published an interview with her murdered woman a year earlier, with the journalist Anna Politkovskaya Vera, in which she expressed her doubts that her mother’s murderers would be punished [22] .

In 2005, Gazeta and The Telegraph Group Ltd., the publisher of the influential British daily newspaper The Daily Telegraph and the Sunday newspaper The Sunday Telegraph, entered into a partnership agreement. From June 3, 2006, the entire circulation of the newspaper began to be printed in the printing complex “Extra M” [2] .

In 2008, Peter Fadeev left the post of chief editor. His departure (according to some versions) was related to an interview published in August of the same year, in which the official causes of the Russian-Georgian war were being questioned [23] . Since January 2009, Sergei Muravyov, a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University , has been appointed to the post of editor-in-chief of Gazeta . MV Lomonosov , working in the media since 1993. Before taking up the post of first deputy editor-in-chief and then editor-in-chief of Gazeta in 2005, he worked in the newspapers Kommersant, Izvestia , and Vremya Novostey . A new team of editors headed by Muravyov changed the format of the publication from business to social-political [23] .

In December 2009, several sources in the editorial office who had contacts with the owner Vladimir Lisin reported that money for printing the newspaper remained only for the publication of the publication during the first quarter of 2010, and for this reason a large-scale preparation for the transition of the Gazeta to the online version, which will be accompanied by personnel changes and massive staff reductions. During this procedure, almost all of its key employees left the publication [24] . On April 1, 2010, the paper version of the "Gazeta" ceased to exist [25] [26] . At the time of closure, the editorial staff did not receive wages for three months, which also served as a pretext for a strike [27] .

At various times they collaborated with the publication: Viktor Shenderovich [28] [29] , Evgeny Kiselyov [30] , Igor Irtenev [31] , Maxim Kononenko [32] [33] , Thekla Tolstaya [34] , Valery Ledovskikh [35] , Vasily Utkin [36] , Yuri Rozanov [37] [38] , Nadezhda Kevorkova [39] , Gleb Sitkovsky [40] , Slava Taroschina [41] , Vadim Dubnov [42] [43] , Roman Trushechkin, Anton Dolin , Anton Nosik , Alina Rebel, Yevgeny Yasin , Alexey Andronov , Alexander Khavanov , Kirill Dementyev [44] .
