Saint Modan was the son of the leader of one of the tribes of Ireland . He became a monk and in 522 built a chapel in Driburh (Dryburgh), Scotland , near which the monastery of Driburh (Dryburgh Abbey) subsequently arose.
He led an active sermon on behalf of the Celtic church in the vicinity of Falkirk and Stirling , as well as along the Firth of Forth , until he was elected rector, whose place he took reluctantly. A few years later he left the abbot and began to live as a hermit, settling near Dumbarton , where he departed to the Lord. His relics rest in the church of St. Modana at Rosneath .
