Biography
The exact date of the election of Gisad I to the department of the Urzhel diocese is unknown. The first mention of him as a bishop of Urgel dates back to December 8, 857, when he consecrated the church of Santa Maria de Saldes. Although his predecessor, Beat, is known from only one charter dated 850, the 857 year is considered the traditional date for the beginning of the pontificate of Bishop Ghisad.
Little is known about the presence of Gisad I at the department of Urgel. The most significant event of his bishopric was the receipt of Gisad on November 19, 860, from the King of the West Frankish state, Charles II of the Bald Charter, with new privileges for the Urchel diocese. In particular, the charter expanded the power of Bishop Urgell over the inhabitants of the town of Andorra la Vella and its environs, on which additional duties were imposed in favor of the church [1] . The year 860 also includes a report on the participation of Bishop Urgel in the church cathedral in Tusi . On December 13, 871, Gisad consecrated the church of San Andreu de Grescher, founded by Count Urgel and Cerdany Bethred I the Hairy .
The last evidence of historical sources about Gisad I refers to March 17, 872. It is traditionally believed that the year 872 is the last year Gisad was in the department of Urgel, although his successor, Bishop Galderic, is mentioned in historical sources only once in 878 , and the catalog of bishops of Urgell from the monastery in Gerry (XII century) gives Gisad I 21 year of the pontificate.
Notes
- ↑ Bishop Urgell received the right to levy a tenth of all iron ore and tar mined here, as well as a third of the income from the local market, in his favor from the inhabitants of Andorra la Vella.
